NHL draft picks and a quick look at the best players at the 2017 NHL Draft


NHL draft is underway, and the NHL is set to hold its first mock draft on Friday.

Here are some quick thoughts on who the first round of the 2017 draft will look like.1.

Boston BruinsThe Bruins are hoping to pick up a big-bodied defenceman in the first five picks.

There are many good options available at the top of the first pick.

They’ve already drafted defenceman Michael Dal Colle in the second round and forward Brandon Carlo in the third round.

The Bruins could add more to the defence corps if they are able to trade for another defenceman.2.

Buffalo SabresThe Sabres have a good group of forwards at the bottom of the third pick, but there are several forwards in the draft that they would like to add.

They could use the pick to acquire a top-six forward.3.

Florida PanthersThe Panthers need to add a centre, and they are currently missing that.

They are expected to trade down with the Devils to get one of the top forwards available.4.

Los Angeles KingsThe Kings are going to need a top winger.

There have been reports that they will select Florida’s Mattias Janmark.

They also need a defenceman at the end of the second and third round, and some top prospects at the other end of that range.5.

Montreal CanadiensThe Canadiens are one of many teams who have a big need at the forward position.

They would love to add some depth to their top six.6.

New Jersey DevilsThe Devils are expected for the pick, as well as a defence prospect.

They’ve been linked to defenceman Jacob Trouba and forward Nathan MacKinnon.7.

Philadelphia FlyersThe Flyers would like a top centre.

They have the highest need in the NHL.

They may need to move up a couple spots to get that centre.8.

Pittsburgh PenguinsThe Penguins need a centre.

There has been speculation that they could go in a different direction and trade for a defencemen.9.

Nashville PredatorsThe Predators have a huge need at centre.

It’s not clear what they’re looking for.10.

Tampa Bay LightningThe Lightning could be looking to add depth at centre, but they don’t have a ton of options in the top eight.11.

Washington CapitalsThe Capitals have a couple of centres available, but are likely to take a defensive defenceman first.12.

Philadelphia CoyotesThe Coyotes are expected as a possible pick for the Devils.

They’d love to get a top defenceman and add some talent at the back end of their defence.13.

Ottawa SenatorsThe Senators are hoping for a centre at the NHL draft.

They’re currently missing one defenceman, and another is expected to be acquired in the trade.14.

Winnipeg JetsThe Jets have a lot of options at defence.

They’ll need to take some prospects at a couple different spots.15.

Dallas StarsThe Stars are expected in the mix for a top prospect.16.

Nashville Blue JacketsThe Blue Jackets need to make a move to add another forward.17.

Edmonton OilersThe Oilers are expected, along with Vancouver, to go after a centre with the first overall pick.18.

Ottawa RedblacksThe Redblabies are expected after trading for the first defenceman to go up one spot.19.

St. Louis BluesThe Blues have a need for a forward.

They need a winger at the trade deadline.20.

Nashville SabresThe Predators are expected.

They lost a centre in the last few years and need a goal scorer.21.

Florida MarliesThe Marlies are expected and the Blues are expected with the second pick.22.

Winnipeg Blue BombersThe Bombers are expected following the trade of defenseman Michael Frolik to the Winnipeg Jets.23.

Edmonton JetsThe Winnipeg Jets are expected once again to go for a big centre.24.

Nashville SoundsThe Sounds have a great group of defencemen at the point.

They won the Calder Cup last season and are expected at the draft.25.

Carolina HurricanesThe Hurricanes need a wing.

They currently have a pair of centre prospects at each of the three positions.26.

Ottawa WildThe Wild are looking to make moves.

They likely will add one defencemen and one forward.27.

Colorado AvalancheThe Avalanche need to acquire some offence at the centre position.28.

Toronto Maple LeafsThe Maple Leafs are expected when the draft picks are announced.29.

Edmonton FlamesThe Flames have a number of options and will need to find a centre to add to their forward group.30.
